Red Lotus field trip

We have the special opportunity (Saturday morning) to take a trip to the Red Lotus Lake. There are a few places in Udon Thani that have this special natural attraction. We are very lucky to be heading toward one on our way to the Boys Home in Nong Khai. Because we have been really engaged and involved, the Thai team and Chris made it possible for us to go experience this natural wonder first hand.  Some of us read about them in the In-Flight magazine on the way here.

We have an early wake up and an early departure.  The consensus was that since the sun was up, it didn't really feel that early.  On the road by 7:00 am, music blasting....it was a good morning.

The trip took nearly an hour. We pulled into a dirt road, and couldn't imagine what we would find. Interestingly, there was water on both sides of us, and a couple of active ricefields. The eastern part of the country is generally experiencing a drought, but this village has managed to grow a couple of fields.

As we pulled in, we could see, off into the distance, the red specks in the water.  What a spectacular sight.  We boarded four flat bottomed boats and took a tour of the Red Lotus Lake.  The day hadn't heated up too badly yet, so the flowers were in full bloom.  Their growing season is from December until mid-April.  Many of the lotus flowers an lily pads have already died once and are re-blooming.  It was a spectacular way to begin the last full day in Thailand
